Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage done to the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. This will often cause weakness, numbness, and pain in the feet. This type of neuropathy can result from traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic problems, inherited causes and an exposure to toxins. The symptoms include muscle weakness, a lack of coordination and falling, sharp burning pain, numbness and extreme sensitivity to touch. People who have diabetes, kidney and thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies and have a history of alcohol abuse are at an increased risk to acquire peripheral neuropathy. Complications that can arise are infections, burns and skin trauma and an increased propensity to falls. The risk for peripheral neuropathy can be decreased by exercising regularly, avoiding factors that may cause nerve damage and eating a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and protein. If you feel that you may be at risk for peripheral neuropathy, it is advised to consult with a podiatrist.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Dr. Maria Branca from New York. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

The medical term that is referred to as flat feet is indicative of little or no arches in the feet. It is noticeable while standing, as the foot rests completely on the floor. Many patients who experience this condition often feel foot pain, and this can result from ligaments and muscles that have become strained. Additionally, the feet may feel stiff, and shoes may wear unevenly and quickly. There are several causes as to why flat feet can exist. These include injuries that may have occurred to the foot or ankle, inherited traits, or muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy. Mild relief may be found when gentle foot stretches and exercises are performed, as this may help to manage the symptoms. Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Patients who have experienced the medical condition that is referred to as gout are often aware of the severe pain and discomfort it may cause. It occurs as a result of genetic factors, or if foods are eaten in excess that have elevated levels of purines. This can cause crystals to form in the joints of the big toe, and it can often be debilitating. After a proper diagnosis is performed which consists of extracting a small amount of fluid from the affected joint, the correct treatment can begin. There are specific medications that provide relief from this condition. Additionally, research has indicated that it may be beneficial to incorporate healthy eating habits into your daily routine. These might include limiting red meats, shellfish, and cutting back on excess alcohol. If you think you have gout, it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can recommend the correct form of treatment.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
